Organised by the BWC Implementation Support Unit, Office for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations Office at Geneva together with the Geneva Forum, the seminar about Synthetic Biology: Building a Safe and Secure Future, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland at the 25th August 2010.

The US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues held its first meeting on July 8-9 in Washington, DC.  The primary topic was synthetic biology.

EU Africa Working Group

The EU Africa Working Group covers all IDC activities related to Africa and the EU African partnership.

Main objectives are:

* to promote communication, exchange and cooperation between Europeans and Africans on issues relevant for both continents or of global dimension;

* to launch activities and projects helping to ease and facilitate this cooperation and networking;

* to assemble and provide relevant information, through reports and publications; and

* to cooperate and interact with other researchers, scientists and stakeholders in Europe, Africa and beyond, working in this field.

Current activities are:

SUSTAINERGYNET - The Working Group is currently involved in the implementation of the new EU FP7 CSA project coordinated by IDC. SustainergyNet aims at elaborating and recommending ways to better integrate Civil Society Organisations (CSO) in research and agenda setting on Sustainable Development and Sustainable Energy Management in Africa. Other partner Institutions within this project are GRET (France), TU Dresden (Germany), OIIP (Austria), AFREPREN/FWD (Kenya), University of Cairo/IARS (Egypt) and University of Yaoundé II (Cameroon). SustainergyNet has started on 1 August 2008 for a total duration of 24 months until 31 July 2010.  More information can be found on the project's website www.sustainergynet.eu

ATTENDANCE AND PRESENTATION ON INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS - The members of the Working Group are regularly invited to international Conferences and Meetings addressing the issue of EU-African relations.

  • On 12 December 2007, Angela Meyer gave a presentation at the Royal Institute for International Relations (EGMONT) in Brussels (Belgium) on the role of regional cooperation for peace and security in Central Africa.
  • From 17 - 19 September 2008, Angela Meyer was invited to the 3rd International Conference of the NoE GARNET (FP6) at Sciences-Po Bordeaux (France) and gave a presentation on Regional Parliaments in Central Africa.
  • From 4-7 June 2009, Angela Meyer participated at the 3rd European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) at the University of Leipzig (Germany) on "Respacing Africa".
  • On 13 November 2009, Gregor Giersch and Angela Meyer were invited by House for Europe to the Symposium on European Development Policies and the Millennium Development Goals in Africa at the University of Enschede (The Netherlands). On their workshop on "Civil society involvement for Sustainable Energy Development in Africa", they discussed with students major problems and obstacles faced by civil society organisations active in the field of renewable energy in Africa and jointly elaborated solutions and ways for improvement.
