Organised by the BWC Implementation Support Unit, Office for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations Office at Geneva together with the Geneva Forum, the seminar about Synthetic Biology: Building a Safe and Secure Future, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland at the 25th August 2010.

The US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues held its first meeting on July 8-9 in Washington, DC.  The primary topic was synthetic biology.

République Démocratique du Congo et ses voisins - Les défis de l'intégration régionale en Afrique Centrale. Egmont Palace, Brussels, Belgium. 12 December 2007. The Central Africa Programme of EGMONT and CRE-AC organised a onedayconference to discuss different aspects of the relationship between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its neighbours. The conference was focused in particular on trends and dynamics of regional integration in Central Africa and the current and future role of the DRC in this process. Representing IDC, the Dr. Angela Meyer participated with her speech "From Intergovernmentalism to Supranationalism, from Cooperation to Integration. 1st International DIVERSEEDS Meeting. Rome, Italy. 04-07 December 2007. The first large international meeting of DIVERSEEDS was organized by IDC, the University of Birmingham, the ECPGR and Bioversity International. The event involved participants from several European countries (Austria, Italy, UK, Germany), China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. The meeting therefore provided an opportunity to intensify our inter-regional discussion on issues regarding conservation and use of plant genetic resources (PGR). More...

 

ECPGR- DIVERSEEDS- BIOVERSITY Inter-regional Workshop. Maccarese, Italy. 03-05 December 2007. The ECPGR, in collaboration with the IDC project DIVERSEEDS and Bioversity International, organized a workshop of regional network coordinators, with the intention of assessing the changes in the environment, in which the networks operate, revisiting existing network concepts and strategies, elaborating suggestions for new/ revised/ improved approaches of regional genetic resources networks, and identifying formal channels of communication and cooperation among Regional Networks. European ESF Conference on Synthetic Biology (ECSB): Design, Programming and Optimisation of Biological Systems. Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain. 24-29 November 2007. Markus Schmidt (IDC member and coordinator of the Biosafety Working Group: Synbiosafe) was invited to join the main panel discussion in collaboration with Alexander Kelle (University of Bath) and Agomoni Ganguli Mitra (University of Zurich). DIVERSEEDS Workshops in Europe, China and Vietnam. September - October 2007. Almost at the same time at the end of September/beginning of October, three DIVERSEEDS workshops with the support of IDC were carried out in Ljubljana, Slovenia by our European team; in Beijing by our Chinese team; and in Hanoi, Vietnam by our Southeast Asian team). Synthetic Biology 3.0. ETH Zurich, Switzerland. 24-26 June 2007. The third international meeting on synthetic biology was cellebrated at the the ETH Zürich. Markus Schmidt of IDC, acted as international scientific advisory board member, and organised a conference session on biosafety and biosecurity: "Framing the safety and security aspects of synthetic biology". 18th EUCARPIA Genetic Resources Section Meeting. Piestany, Slovak Republic. 23-26 May 2007. This new edition of EUROCARPIA (European Association for Research on Plant Breeding) held in Piestany joint public and private breeders and plant scientists from Europe and other regions of the world in a three day conference. IDC's Markus Schmidt as representant of DIVERSEEDS took part on the event with his oral presentation: Networking on conservation and use of plant genetic resources in Europe and Asia. More....
