Organised by the BWC Implementation Support Unit, Office for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations Office at Geneva together with the Geneva Forum, the seminar about Synthetic Biology: Building a Safe and Secure Future, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland at the 25th August 2010.

The US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues held its first meeting on July 8-9 in Washington, DC.  The primary topic was synthetic biology.

International SYNBIOSAFE Workshop. Vienna, Austria. 15 November 2008. International event on the societal and ethical aspects of synthetic biology took place at the Organisation for International Dialogue and Conflict Management (IDC) in Vienna. The workshop was attended by SB scientists, social scientists, ethicists, safety and security researchers and experts on technology assessment from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. VBC Symposium: Life under (Re)construction. Vienna, Austria. 13 - 14 November 2008. Over the last six years, the Vienna Biocenter PhD Symposium has established itself as an exciting meeting platform for students and senior scientists from all over the world. Considered as the first conference in Austria about synthetic biology, the symposium brought together international experts of the field. The Festival is a point of reference in the scientific divulgation and a great event to present the scientific culture at an international level. Distingushed scientist Pier Luigi Luisi invited Vítor Martins dos Santos (Helmholtz Zentrum), Sven Panke (ETH Zürich), and Markus Schmidt (IDC) to present and discusse the field of Synthetic Biology in the session Creare la vita in laboratorio (Creating live in a laboratory). Sustainergynet Kick Off meeting. Vienna, Austria. 30-31 October 2008. Initial meeting of the project Sustainergynet for integrating civil, scientific and stakeholder knowledge towards African sustainable energy policies. The meeting took place on the IDC office in Vienna where all the representatives from the different partners (GRET, OIIP, TUD, AFREPREN-FWD, CU-IARS) met to discuss the first steps of the project. Synthetic Biology 4.0. Hong Kong, China. 10-12 October 2008. The conference was a coordinated effort between HKUST, Hong Kong University, the Biobricks Foundation and Chinese University. Hong Kong provided an ideal location to explore the commercialization of Synthetic Biology in Asia as well as the launching of regional research and educational programs. At the conference Markus Schmidt presented a draft version of "A consensus paper guiding the development of synthetic biology". More...

 

3rd GARNET annual conference. Bordeaux, France. 17-20 September 2008. The EU Network of Excellence GARNET holds an annual international conference (AIC) each year, intended to engage network members and scholars from outside the network on key GARNET research themes. Hosted by IEP Bordeaux the topic of this year was based on the theme of: 'Mapping Integration and Regionalism in a Global World: The EU and Regional Governance outside the EU'. Representing IDC, Dr. Angela Meyer participated on the conference with her presentation "Regional Parliaments in Central Africa. A difficult birth". More...

 

2nd International DIVERSEEDS Meeting. Kunming, Yunnan, PR China. 2-5 September 2008. The meeting of the DIVERSEEDS project in which IDC was the coordinator, brought together experts from China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Israel, Austria, United Kingdom, Germany, and Bioversity International to discuss challenges to the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources and possible ways to improve the cooperation between European and Asian stakeholders. Members of CAMBIODIVERSITY (another international project coordinated by IDC) were also among this group of experts. More...

 

First Project Meeting of CAMBIODIVERSITY. Phnom Penh, Cambodia. 25 - 31 August 2008. Project Coordinator Dr. Angela Meyer (IDC), together with the Austrian Project Partner Veronika Hager (BOKU), visited the Cambodian Partner in CAMBIODIVERSITY project, the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) for a joint project meeting. They met with the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, M. Chuong Sophal, and Dr. Adrian Bolliger from DED, to discuss issues on the implementation of Cambiodiversity. More...

 

Genomics and Society: Setting the Agenda. Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 17 - 18 April 2008. Organized by Society&Genomics, the aim of the conference was not only to study or discuss the agenda of genomics science and technology, but also to shaped this agenda in an interactive way. To do so, a series of individuals involved in setting and/or implementing genomics agendas were invited to the event. Among them was Markus Schmidt (board member of IDC). These individuals acted as commentator in specific ‘panels' from the fields of science, policy, and professional practices. More...

 

DIVERSEEDS public information event. Beijing, China. 20 January 2008. With the collaboration of INBAR (International Network for Bamboo and Rattan) and WWF (World Wildlife Fund), DIVERSEEDS (the project developed by IDC) hosted a public information event on the value of plant genetic resources, that took place in the Botanic Garden of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS). IMEC Visionary Seminar "Synthetic Biology, Designing and Building Living Systems". Heverlee, Belgium. 17 January 2008. Hosted by IMEC and empowered by Leuven Inc., the seminar was an approach of four speakers to the field of Synthetic Biology. The four speakers represented the cross-disciplinary aspect: Prof. Piet Herdewijn and Prof. Guido Volckaert considered the field from the biological side while Prof. Em. Hugo De Man highlighted the engineering aspects and Prof. Markus Schmidt (IDC co-founder) talked about the safety and ethics of synthetic life. More...
