Organised by the BWC Implementation Support Unit, Office for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations Office at Geneva together with the Geneva Forum, the seminar about Synthetic Biology: Building a Safe and Secure Future, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland at the 25th August 2010.

The US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues held its first meeting on July 8-9 in Washington, DC.  The primary topic was synthetic biology.

Hearing of the US bioethics commission on Synthetic Biology. Washington DC, USA. 8-9th July 2010. Following the Venter Institute's success of implanting a synthetic genome into a bacteria, US President Obama ordered the US bioethics commission to study the implications of synthetic biology. The bioethics commission will organise a hearing on the ethical implications of synthetic biology. Practically all of the invited experts to this hearing are from North America, with the exception of Markus Schmidt (IDC) who is the only European expert invited to the meeting.

Regional Presentation Event of the SustainergyNet Project. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. 1st July 2010. In cooperation with the Groupe de Recherche et d'Échanges Technologiques (GRET), IDC organised this workshop in Burkina Faso to present the newly launched webtool SustainergyWeb. Angela Meyer explained the main features and services offered by the webtool to interested stakeholders from the civil society, research and development sector, industry and the policy-making level. A subsequent panel discussion addressed the issue of civil society involvement in sustainable energy developments initiatives research and share experiences of multi-stakeholder cooperation. 6th European Meeting of the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts (SLSA). Riga, Latvia. 15th -20th June 2010. The SLSA-EU 2010 conference was dedicated to exploring fabrics, structures, surfaces, and interfaces in a world that has been transformed to a large extent through technoscience and networked media. Markus Schmidt from IDC participated on the conference through his work focused on Biopalimpsest and on the overwriting of diverse and apparently unrelated knowledge flows induced by the superposition of biological disciplines or models, and their cultural impact (molecular biology, ecology, animal/plant studies. etc). Seminar: « Technologies convergentes : enjeux et perspectives ». Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, Paris, France. 8th June 2010. Organized by the National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF) and the French Ministery of Industry, the seminar was based on the convergent sciences of nanotechnology, biotechnology, technologies of the information and Cognitives Sciences. Organized by the Prof. Mark Bedau, the workshop was part of the activities of the ISSP (The Initiative for Science, Society, and Policy) who aimed to take stock of the state of the art in living technology and recommend priorities for the socially responsible scientific pursuit of living technology.
